SHAWINIGAN, Que. – Claude Bouchard’s men were trying to grab their first victory of the season Saturday afternoon at Centre Gervais Auto. Young goaltender Zachary Bouthillier got the job done and picked up his first win in the QMJHL 3-2!
Both teams were looking for their first win this season. Having lost yesterday by a score of 3-0 against the Remparts in Quebec, Chicoutimi were trying to bounce back.
Having been cut from the San Jose Sharks training camp, defenceman Cavan Fitzgerald was back to start his last season in the QMJHL. The 20-year-old formed a pair with Nicholas Welsh. The defender Renat Dadadzhanov got the night off.
In goal, head coach Claude Bouchard made a slight change sending out the young goalkeeper Zachary Bouthillier. At the opposing end, Chicoutimi boss Yanick Jean gave a day off to Julio Billia in favor of Xavier Potvin.
It was the visitors who scored first. At the very end of the first, Keenan MacIsaac was left alone in the slot and beat Bouthillier with a precise shot. It was the only goal scored in the first 20 minutes of play. However, the Cataractes were leading 5-3 in shots.
During the second period, the Cataractes knocked on the door several times, but the young Xavier Potvin refused to yield a goal throughout the period. After 40 minutes, the Cataractes still trailed 1-0, but dominated 29-7 in the shots department.
The home side struck early in the third period to tie. Having scored two goals yesterday against the Tigres, Samuel Asselin got back to work threading the needle to bring the game back to even. Saguenéens, however, pushed back again by taking the lead when Trois-Rivières native Julien Tessier scored. The Cataractes however, would respond not long after with Justin Bernier and Cavan Fitzgerald each scoring a goal apiece to give Shawinigan the victory!
