It was opening weekend for the Shawinigan Cataractes as Daniel Renaud’s team faced Blainville-Boisbriand on friday night (22 sept.) and Victoriaville on sunday afternoon (24 sept.). Even though Shawinigan lost both games, fans got to attend a spectacular start! Also, while facing two top contenders, the Cataractes managed to match up greatly…
Glotov everywhere on the ice ! (SHA vs BLA)
Fans in Shawinigan got to take a look at a few players that will put on a show troughout the season for sure! Against Blainville-Boisbriand, one of those was Vasily Glotov. The Russian native took control of the game in the offensive zone and fired up the attack! He initiated a fantastic play with Samuel Blier that led to Jan Drozg’s first QMJHL goal. Later in the first, he took part a of play that led to Samuel Asselin’s goal while the team was on the powerplay. Unfortunately, on both occasions, the Armada responded with goals… Therefore, the first period ended up in a 2-2 tie.
The second period was much tougher for the local team as Blainville charged the net and managed to take the lead early in the period. Fans had to wait at the last minutes of play to see Gabriel Denis receive a spectacular pass from Jérémy Manseau, go all alone on a breakaway and beat Francis Leclerc with a laser!
In the third, penalties cost Shawinigan the win despite a good effort from every player. Blainville scored in the first half of the period while being on the powerplay. For the rest of the game, espacially during the last two minutes of play, the Cataractes coudn’t convert.
Overall, despite a few mistakes early in the game, Mikhail Denisov played a good game for Shawinigan.
Vasily Glotov and Jan Drozg received respectivily first and third star nominations.
Manseau, Asselin… and Denis show the way ! (VIC vs SHA)
Many experts agree that Victoriaville has the most dangerous offense in the league this season. In the first period, both teams displayed a lot of speed and agility but did not managed to score. For the Cataractes, Samuel Guilbault, Cameron Askew and the line of Glotov, Drozg and Manseau had the best chances. On the other end, Denisov showed why he was selected on the all-star team last year with 12 saves.
In the second period, things got more intense and 4 goals were scored. On Shawinigan’s side, Jérémy Manseau’s grit around the net paid big time when he took a rebound in front of the net to beat the netminder. Jan Drozg got an assist on the play. Later in the period, after Maxime Comtois’s goal on the breakaway, Denisov made a tremendous glove save when James Phelan got all alone on a breakaway.
That save inspired Gabriel Denis whose work along the board got him to take the puck and found Samuel Asselin all alone in front of the net. Asselin quickly pushed the puck behind the netminder for his second goal of the season.
Despite a powerplay by James Phelan 5 minutes into the third period, Daniel Renaud’s players didn’t give up and came back a few minutes later when Cameron Askew, standing in front of the net, converted a Gabriel Denis’ pass to tie the game.
During the overtime period, Maxime Comtois scored his second of the game but also his second game-winner of the season to give Victoriaville the win. Despite the loss, the Cataractes have nothing to be ashamed of since the battled greatly.
First win of the season on wednesday night ?
Next game for the Cataractes will be on wednesday night as the Sherbrooke Phoenix (19h) will be in town for the first time of the season. If Shawinigan’s players keep playing the way they did the last two games, no doubt that the first win of the season will happen on wednesday night!
