Meier leads Mooseheads past Cataractes

After a two-game road swing in the Maritimes, the Cataractes were back at home for a tilt against the Halifax Mooseheads Thursday night at the Centre Gervais Auto.

The first 20 minutes was mainly calm and the game was scoreless heading into the second period.

Early in the second period, Halifax got on the board with a goal from Philippe Gadoury at 1:07. Maxime Fortier and Jesse Lussier got the assists.

Four minutes later, Timo Meier gave the Mooseheads a two-goal lead as fired a one-timer past Marvin Cupper at 5:05 on the powerplay. Nikolaj Ehlers had the lone assist on Meier’s 14th of the year.

Meier wasn’t finished yet as he jammed home a rebound on the powerplay to put his squad up 3-0 on the road. Gadoury and Ehlers each added helpers.

Just past the midway point of the period, the Cataractes finally got on the board with a marker from Gabriel Slight, assisted by Pascal Aquin.

Towards the end of the frame, Meier completed the hattrick restoring the three-goal lead for the Mooseheads as he finished off a pretty passing play from Danny Moynihan and Nikolaj Ehlers at 17:57.

The Cataractes would respond before the end of the period as Anthony Beauvillier made it 4-2 with less than two minutes left in the frame. Brandon Gignac and Gabriel Sylvestre each assisted on Beauvillier’s 18th of the season.

Meier was back at it again three minutes into the third period for Halifax as he put the visitors ahead 5-2 with his fourth of the evening on the powerplay. It was once again Danny Moynihan and Ehlers getting helpers.

A minute later, Jesse Lussier ended Cupper’s outing with his second goal of the year to give the Mooseheads a commanding 6-2 lead. Lussier’s powerplay marker was assisted by Gadoury and Ehlers.

Dennis Yan made it 6-3 with a minute to go on the powerplay. Alexis D’Aoust and Gabriel Slight assisted on Yan’s 16th of the season.

The Mooseheads would hold on for a 6-3 win at the Centre Gervais Auto as Montreal Canadiens’ prospect Zachary Fucale 32 saves in the contest.
